Treatment & Management

TREATMENT OF TRICHURIASIS

MEBENDAZOLE

Modes of Action: Mebendazole inhibits the formation of the worms’ microtubules and causes the worms’ glucose depletion.

Mebendazole tablets are indicated for the treatment of Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Ascaris lumbricoides (common roundworm), Ancylostoma duodenale (common hookworm), Necator americanus (American hookworm) in single or mixed infections.

Efficacy varies as a function of such factors as pre-existing diarrhea and gastrointestinal transit time, degree of infection, and helminth strains. Efficacy rates derived from various studies are shown in the table below:

Pinworm (enterobiasis)
Whipworm (trichuriasis)
Common Roundworm (ascariasis)

ALBENDAZOLE

ALBENZA (albendazole) is an orally administered broad-spectrum anthelmintic. Chemically, it is methyl 5-(propylthio)-2-benzimidazolecarbamate. Albendazole act by creases whipworm ATP production, causing energy depletion, immobilization, and death. 400 mg bid for 8 to 14 days may be used.

MANAGEMENT OF TRICHURIASIS

Supportive treatment :

  • IV FLUID for resuscitation (use 14-16G needle)- Crystalloid (0.9% saline or Ringers Lactate)
  • IV Fluid
  • BLOOD TRANSFUSION – Packed RBC (Cross matched+warmed at 37C
packed RBC

    platelet
    caryoprecipitate
  • DIVC Regime – Fresh Frozen Plasma units,Platelets units and Cryoprecipitate
  • fresh frozen plasma
